How To Keep Your Cat Healthy: 3 Tips
February is National Cat Health Month, and it’s a great time to remind yourself of the best ways to keep your cat healthy. Of course, the professional pet sitters at Boulevard Bark are committed to your cat’s ongoing health, and we know that you are, too. Here are some of the things we all can do to ensure that the cats in our care are as healthy as they can be.
Keep Your Cat Hydrated
Make sure that your feline friend is getting enough water! If you feed your cat dry food, she/he will need to drink more than if you’re feeding wet food–that’s just because dry food is about 10% water, whereas wet (canned) food is about 80% water. Dehydration in cats can lead to a number of more serious health problems, up to and including major issues with the kidneys, so keep an eye on your kitty to make sure she’s drinking enough. Consider switching to canned food, or adding water to your cat’s food at mealtimes. Some cats may prefer a glass or stainless steel drinking bowl, as plastic may leave a bad taste. And make sure kitty has plenty of fresh water–don’t let it sit and get stagnant.
Keep Your Cat Healthy With Exercise
Cats may seem like they want to be sleeping 24/7. However, they truly need a great deal of physical and mental stimulation for good health. There are loads of fun ways to engage your cat in fun activities. Good exercise prevents feline obesity. Additionally, it will prevent the boredom that leads to destructive behaviors, like shredding curtains or furniture. You can encourage your cat to exercise in all kinds of ways. Just having a cat tree or a cat tower in your home will give your cat a special place for climbing and scratching. You could give your kitty a comfortable perch near a window where he/she can look at birds and outdoor wildlife. Even feeding your cat meals or treats out of a puzzle ball will help him to be more engaged and stimulated while eating.
Keep Your Cat Groomed
It’s also important to pay attention to grooming your cat. To keep your cat healthy, you need to make sure that she receives the right amount of grooming from you. Yes, cats do groom themselves, but they need your help to finish the job. When you brush and comb your cat, you improve his circulation and muscle tone, and smooth down the fur for better insulation. Grooming your cat also will give you time and space to notice if there are any problems with your cat’s skin or coat. Purina provides some excellent tips for grooming your cat on your own.
